Kohler Engines
Kohler makes a very good product that is geared toward the
future. They are ready to take on the 2001 emission standards with
engines such as the new Kohler Aegis pictured to the right. When
purchasing a product with a Kohler Engine on it, you don't have to
worry about the quality of the engine. You will find Kohler to be a
commercial grade engine built to last many seasons.
Magnum
The Kohler Magnum is the last of a breed, so to
speak. Many of you remember the K-series, at least around here when
the locals start talking about tough engines, the Kohler K-series
always comes up.
The Magnum, like the K-series is a 4-cycle, single cylinder, L-head,
air-cooled, horizontal shaft, cast iron block. Now that's a mouth
full, but it boils down to one tough engine that's been proven over
time. No one knows how long the L-head engine design will last with
the new emission standards breathing down their neck, but names like
Onan and Kohler will be there when the swan song is played.
Currently the Kohler Magnum comes in 8, 12 and 16 horsepower. Right
now in the single cylinder, L-head, commercial engine market, Kohler
Magnum is king of themountain.
Command
The Kohler Command is part of the new breed of engines to hit the
market in recent years.
These engines run more efficient by utilizing technologies like
overhead valves, hydraulic valve lifters, full flow pressure
lubrication. The Command comes in two flavors, Command and Command
Pro. The Command is a 4-cycle, air-cooled, gasoline engine with the
following features:
- 11 to 27 hp, vertical and horizontal crankshafts.
- Single and V-twin cylinder configuration.
- Overhead valve design, with hydraulic valve lifters.
- Pressure lubricated with oil filter.
- Aluminum head and crankcase with steel cylinder liner.
- Electronic ignition and automatic compression release.
The Command Pro adds these additional features:
- Self relieving choke carburetor.
- Larger capacity fuel, air and oil filters.
- Hardened crankshaft journals.
- Precision aligned camshaft.
- High performance spark plug.
- Universal yellow service points.
- Dual oil drain.
The Kohler Command and Command Pro are used on a variety of
applications from consumer products like Cub Cadet and John Deere
mowers to commercial / industrial applications. Also, check out the
new 26 hp Command fuel injected engine. This gives you an idea of
the direction the industry is headed. If your into Kart racing you
might want to take a look at Kohler's new CH6T XKE Go-Kart engine.
The command is a "World Class" engine and can compete with the best
of them.
Command CS Pro
New in 1999 is Kohlers CS line of horizontal crankshaft OHV
engines, designated as the Command CS Pro series, which will be in
4, 6, 8.5, 10, 12 horsepower.
These engines were designed to supplement the need for commercial
grade engines in the single cylinder small horsepower range of 4 to
12 hp, currently not available in the Command Pro series. Two
footprint sizes cover the five engines. Here's some of the features
to look for on this line of new engines.
- OHV slant cylinder (22 & 28 degrees).
- Large capacity fuel tank w/shutoff and dual filter.
- Oversized muffler w/arrestor & guard.
- Steel-forged crankshaft.
- Dual main ball bearings.
- Splash lubrication.
- Oil Sentry, low oil shutdown.
- Oversized muffler w/arrestor & guard.
- Sound absorbing alloy crankcase.
- Two year warranty
AegisTM
Water-Cooled
Kohler has designed a new engine to meet the needs of the future.
Combining a patented liquid-cooling design, heavy-duty air
filtration system and many of the proven features of Kohler's
air-cooled Command series, the quiet-running Kohler Aegis provide
the commercial turf and consumer lawn and garden market with peak
power and torque, fuel efficiency, long engine life and extended
maintenance intervals. This new engine will come in 17, 20 and 23HP
vertical V-Twin OHV design. They are designed for easy maintenance
via a quick release blower shroud to gain access to maintenance
items. The picture shows an Aegis with the shroud removed showing
the cooling coils. This engine will start showing up on equipment
during the 2000 season.
TriadTM OHC
The Kohler Overhead Cam is a next generation engine which
utilizes automotive technologies in its design.
The 16 & 18hp OHC comes in a V-twin design. By utilizing belt drive
overhead cam design, Kohler has achieved a very quiet and efficient
running engine. The drive belt has a 3000 hour life expectancy. Look
for this type of technology to become standard, along with
electronic fuel injection in the engines of the future, as the need
to become more efficient to meet emission standards becomes a
reality.
