Honda Engines

"Honda GX Series Engines have long been recognized as the industry leader in providing reliable, easy-starting and fuel efficient small engines. You'll find GX Series Overhead Valve engines on a wide variety of construction, maintenance and premium power equipment. The rental industry, where power equipment is subjected to the ultimate test of durability, relies heavily on Honda OHV engines to ensure customer satisfaction and a minimal level of maintenance and repair."

The above quote was taken from the GX series sales brochure. It pretty well sums up the state of there engines at the present time. Honda pioneered the GX slant cylinder overhead valve technology. The design has proven very good and a necessity in modern day engines in order to keep up with current emission standards mandated by the US government. This design has proven itself over time and in hard tested commercial applications. Honda now makes engines in two categories - Commercial grade and Consumer grade. We will discuss both below.

GX Series - Single Cylinder

The GX series single cylinder OHV engine design introduced in 1983 is the flagship of there line. This engine was very efficient then and required only minor modifications to meet the current EPA emission standards. Many of you will recognize the engine in the picture if you have been in rental yards, construction sites or seen commercial lawn care trucks driving by. This engine is used on many applications where a long life, easy starting engine is required. The GX single cylinder comes in many sizes and configurations from 1 to 13 hp in both horizontal and vertical crankshafts. The new OHC design GX100 3hp engine is also included in the GX series, along with the new mini 4-stroke at 1 and 1.5 hp. I have listed some of the premium features found on these engines below:

  • Cast iron cylinder sleeves.
  • Automatic decompression release.
  • Oil Alert.
  • Heavy duty air filtration.
  • Electronic ignition.
  • Flange mount ball bearings
GC Series - Single Cylinder

Recently introduced, the new GC line of engines is designed with the homeowner in mind. These engines were not designed for the rigorous demands of all day commercial use like the GX, but rather are for the consumer who needs a quick starting, fuel efficient, quiet engine that will be used weekly, instead of daily. The GC engines use some new technologies that our borrowed from Honda's experience in automotive and motorcycles. The GC uses uniblock, overhead camshaft construction. But unlike many of the OHC engines of today, Honda uses an internal timing belt. This design allows a lower profile for the engine and keeps dirt from building up on the belt and timing gears. The belt is designed to last the life of the engine. From experience I can tell you this is a very simple engine to work on.

The GC series single cylinder engines include 4 or 5 hp in horizontal and vertical crankshafts. These engines include the features listed below:

  • Compact lightweight overhead cam design.
  • The worlds first internal timing belt.
  • Uniblock cylinder construction, no separate head.
  • Minimal number of parts
  • Quiet operation, no valve train noise
GX & GC - Two Cylinder V-Twin

Honda's engine line also includes two cylinder OHV or OHC V-Twin engines in both the commercial GX and the consumer GC series engines. The GX series OHV comes in 18/20/24 hp in horizontal and vertical crankshafts. The GX also has a 16 hp, OHC vertical engine.

The consumer grade GC 16 hp, OHC is also a very high tech engine like the GC's listed above. I can tell you it is very well built and easy to work on. I have had the opportunity to disassemble this engine and am very impressed by this new technology.

I have listed the features of the GX V-Twin OHV engines below:
  • 90º V-Twin OHV format.
  • Solenoid shift type starter.
  • Needle bearing supported governor shaft.
  • Large capacity Dual Element air filter
  • Pressure lubrication w/oil filter
  • Cast iron cylinder sleeve
The Honda Mini 4-Stroke Series Engines
Honda has once again applied its superior engine technology and decades of automotive, motorcycle, and power equipment experience to create the world's first 360°-inclinable 4-stroke engine.

Designed with Honda's trademark ultra-lightweight and compactness, the miracle Mini 4-Stroke efficiently delivers the kind of clean, powerful, quiet performance that makes it the powerplant for an incredible array of portable equipment and applications. Some applications include string trimmers, brush cutters, backpack blowers, mini-tillers, water pumps, generators, hobbyist applications and cement screeds/trowels.
Honda's Mini 4-Stroke Technology

A clever rotary-slinger pumping lubrication system keeps oil in a completely misted state and circulates it using pressure fluctuations generated by the movement of the piston. Built-in passages effectively return the circulated oil to the oil reservoir from every part of the engine, and an oil return port positioned in the center of the reservoir ensures that oil cannot accidentally flow into the combustion chamber.
Choose from these Mini 4-Stroke Series Engines:
GX22 (1 HP), GX25 (1.1 HP), GX31 (1.5 HP).
