IntekTM Engines
With the new Millenium, the engineers at Briggs & Stratton felt
it was time to come up with a new generation of engines for the lawn
& garden industry. These engines lead the field in innovative design
and borrow technologies from their older brothers, the world class
Vanguard engines. Horizontal single
cylinder overhead valve engines, rated at 5.5 to 11 hp with a 30°
slant. Vertical models come in 6.5 to 17.5 hp single cylinder and
90° V-Twin vertical overhead valve engines with full pressure lube
and oil filter, rated from 22 to 26 hp. These are just a few of the
new design features available to the consumer lawn & garden
equipment market using the new Briggs & Stratton Intek engines.
These engines were designed toward meeting the strict EPA rules
which took effect in the year 2001. Many of the things that we had
in the past, such as adjustable carburetors, are now gone. These
engines run learner and cleaner than anything before and it will
become very important for the equipment owner to keep fresh fuel in
these units. With smaller fixed jets and precision metering,
stale fuel problems will cause erratic
engine running or no starts. With proper maintenance their simple
design should give years of trouble free service. The Intek engines
come in six design names in the single cylinder models and for now,
one in the V-Twin.
- PowerBuilt - Entry level engines, aluminum cylinder bore,
paper air filter and splash lube oil system.
- Intek, Intek I/C & Intek Edge - Mid line engines, with cast
iron cylinder sleeve, dual element air filter and upper DU main
bearing.
- Intek Pro - Oil Guard shutdown on horizontal engines. All
use an upper DU main bearing, cast iron cylinder sleeve and dual
element air filter.
- ELS - Extended Life Series - Cast iron cylinder sleeve, with
full pressure lube and filter, dual element air filter and upper
DU bearing. This engine is designed with vertical crankshaft
only, for the riding mower industry. The ELS is used in both the
larger single and V-Twin engines.
In the single cylinder line all ELS engines are pressure lubed and
the horizontal engines all have splash lube systems. Additionally,
some vertical Inteks have pressure lube and filter. The upper DU
bearing used in all but the entry level units is replaceable and
self lubricating. All Intek engines use the latest overhead valve
technology to get the most power and efficiency from each engine.
Hopefully, this gives you some insight into this new engine line.
